“Food is a mirror of society and a statement of the zeitgeist"
Inés Lauber
Record numbers of people rely on food-banks and more are being pushed into food poverty every day because of universal credit delays and welfare system change. At the same time a third of all food produced globally is wasted. What does the current state of the food system say about our society today? In London, one of the richest cities in the world, shocking numbers of people are experiencing food insecurity and do not have reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food. The rising cost of living means paying for energy to cook is a struggle, and choosing healthy food becomes a luxury. Modern-day hunger is unacceptable. With a distracted government and uncertainty surrounding our country’s future, we can’t wait for policy to fix a broken system.
The best meals are eaten together, so let’s embrace communities working together to feed their hungry neighbours. The mobile off- grid kitchen lets them take matters into their own hands without the need for a conventional catering space. It is powered by renewable energy and features an anaerobic digesting-composter to convert food waste into clean bio-gas to cook with. Let’s go off grid and cook nutritious and sustainable meals, feeding those that need it most and strengthening our communities.
